MADE IN THE EMIRATES

December 9th-22nd ,  2016 | Kunstquartier Bethanien, Berlin

Abu Dhabi.  Where today skyscrapers and museums are built, fifty years ago Bedouins, fishermen and pearl divers lived in modest tents.  Rarely has a population experienced such a rapid transformation.  The exhibition ART NOMADS - MADE IN THE EMIRATES shows emerging young artists from the United Arab Emirates, influenced by cultural heritage and visual traditions and translated into the 21st century, while simultaneously presenting the most prominent artists of the older generation.  Art Nomads will cement a connection between the two vastly contrasting capitals, Berlin and Abu Dhabi, demonstrate the two cities commonality in their growing contemporary art scene.   A panel discussion will take place discussing the topic ‘Cultural Capital’.

This project is presented by Etihad Modern Art Gallery in partnership with MOMENTUM and The Sovereign Art Prize.  Opening on the evening of the 9th December followed by a symposium on the 10th December the exhibition will include 20 artists running for 14 days.

Together these artists represent a cross-section of fine art in the Emirates including exciting characters such as Maitha Demithan, Maisoon Al Saleh and Khalid Al Banna.  In the centre of Kreuzberg, under the roof of the Kunstquartier Bethanien an old hospital and chapel these artists will come together to introduce their exciting new ideas into the Berlin art scene.

The exhibition is curated by David Szauder, Zsuzsanna Petró and Rachel Rits-Volloch and will be followed by a sister exhibition of Berlin based artists showing in Abu Dhabi.

SYMPOSIUM

OF THE ART NOMADS

The exhibition is accompanied by a symposium on cultural capital: Abu Dhabi builds the Louvre and the Guggenheim with the world’s top architects, while Berlin rebuilds its Stadtschloss, re-homes its museums, and brings famous museum directors from London to run its theaters.  Is this a parallel trajectory?  Is Abu Dhabi going for the “Berlin Effect” of cultural capital?  We invite art professionals working in and with the UAE to discuss this and other questions linking the two cities.
